Ken Sanders Rare Books is pleased to announce a reading and book signing featuring poet Eric Tanner, author of Rhythms of the Moon, on Thursday, June 18th at 7:00 p.m. at our downtown bookstore (268 South 200 East). Copies of Rhythms of the Moon ($20.00, paperback w/ CD) will be available for purchase and signing at the event. This event is free and open to the public.
Eric Tanner has become something of a cult figure in Salt Lake City, particularly after the publication of his first full-length book of poems, Rhythms of the Moon, a book that was truly a community effort given the hundreds of people from the often disparate parts of Salt Lake's literary and art scenes that showed up for the readings and auctions used to raise money for the book's publication. The book has been a huge success, particularly considering small print run and mostly word-of-mouth marketing.
Tanner attended Brigham Young University where he became an anti-apartheid activist and President of Response, a student activist group particularly interested in racial issues. In addition, he helped found Student Review, and unofficial student newspaper that, despite being banned on campus, would become an alternative voice in Provo for over a decade. Tanner left BYU for study abroad program, during which he was accepted to the Harvard Kennedy School of Government but, instead spent several years literally wandering Europe. The poems in Rhythms of the Moon are based largely on his experiences in Europe – living on the streets, the isolation and enlightenment that such an existence provides, and falling in love. Tanner has been back in Salt Lake now for twelve years and has become a fixture at the city's many open-mic readings where his smooth, meditative style of performance leaves crowds captivated. Don't miss this special event.
